Radial Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) is the most widely used of the several approaches available to assess port efficiency. The shortcoming of these approaches is that they only provide a global score of efficiency without providing information about the efficiency of specific inputs. To overcome this limitation, this paper analyses the efficiency of Spanish ports using a non-radial DEA model. In this way, a global efficiency score is obtained, as well as an index for each type of port traffic (liquid bulk, solid bulk, general commodities, and containers). Globally, it is shown that Spanish ports are highly efficient and that most ports are specialized in container traffic. This paper has enabled the identification of inefficient ports, as well as the identification of those inputs most likely to increase port turnover.
